The QUARRY application from “East Tennessee Materials, LLC” says they will mine 1,250,000 TONS of limestone EACH YEAR for the next 50 years.
According to Wikipedia, the average “Super Dump” truck hauls up to
26 TONS per load. This means:
48,077 - Truck Loads per year
96,154 - Truck Trips per YEAR (Load x 2 = empty in + full out)
1,849 - Truck Trips per WEEK
264 - Truck Trips per DAY (7 days a week)
26.4 - Truck Trips per HOUR (based on a 10 hr work day)
All this, for the NEXT 50 YEARS (their words, not ours)
Those numbers are crazy - if that many trucks hit Bowater Road, I will never get out of our drive. We've got to get this stopped. I am coming to the meeting on the 13th and telling as many others as possible to show up. Can't wait to hear what the Mayor and commissioners have to say about this!

ReplyDeleteI drive a truck for a living and there is no way on God's green earth I would let this many trucks drive by my house, by my kids school, by my babies day care center or through my downtown....if only 25% of these trucks end up coming by that way way way to many......Good lord
ReplyDeleteThis is nuts. The newspaper quoted the spokesperson for the quarry as replying the number of trucks would depend on how much the quarry produces, not that these numbers were excagerated. Makes me wonder if they aren't far off.

ReplyDeleteI heard the County Mayor is telling some people the quarry is wanting to close CR 971 completely. How can they do that? Why is the County Mayor so much in favor of this? And Calhoun's Mayor also?
ReplyDeleteJust think! all the roads that they use will be in excellent condition, because we are using native rocks to pave them. Its about time we got a new rock quarry in this county.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say, Since it is next to the river, has anyone thought they might use barges? Then it wouldn't have any effect on you at all. Bowaters and Olin use barges. Sounds like there is just a handful of you people against this, and you will never win due to your lack of knowledge and gross disregard for the well being of the county. This is disgusting how you are so selfish. Why not have consideration for your neighbors.

Tarver and Townhill and everyone else CONFIRMED they will NOT be using rail or barges - they submitted an application to TDOT saying they will put 375 trucks on the road EVERYDAY! That is even more than this stupid website has listed (264 trucks per day). Go F yourself and the dump trucks you're trying to ride in on.

ReplyDeletePeople, this is other people's land and like other people's money, what you want to do with it is a moot point. This land is not zoned or restricted so if you felt this strongly as a unit perhaps a joint purchase of the quarry property instead of trying to dictate what other's do with their property. We are losing industry daily and as a citizen who was here when the noxious fumes of Olin and Bowater came into the pristine clean air, my family didn't fight it because it was the bread and butter of individuals who worked there whether it be 12 or 600. What strikes me as amazing is that the majority of those opposing the quarry are employed by either Bowater or Olin. I am appalled that you people either didn't understand elementary civics or choose to bulldoze through the rights of others but it comes down to this, OTHER PEOPLES LAND is something you can't control. It is their land, their rights and their industry. As for the traffic on the Bowater Road, SO WHAT? Are we now trying to legislate who can travel on our state roads? If they pay taxes they are entitled to drive the roads just the same as the paper mill trucks that travel through daily with debri falling from them. Wake up people and act like you have some education, please, it's embarrassing to be on the news weekly looking like a bunch of hillbilly ignorant mobs.
ReplyDeleteAs for closing road 971, wasn't it Calhoun who gave a great portion of the oldest road in McMinn County to a private industry that later went bankrupt. FYI you can't legally gift roads even if you are in City Hall and yes, the state can close roads at the discretion of the state. This is a slippery slope when you get into other's business.
