Great news - at least now we can ask some questions and get some answers on this deal since Barham and crew shut us down at the meeting last month.

ReplyDeleteYou may think I was born yesterday just because I live in Calhoun and you are from New York or England or wherever it is you are from, but one of our Citizens Against the McMinn Co. Quarry group already got a threatening phone call at work. I'm not so stupid as to not get that there's a lot of money in this thing for you and your partners and if those of us who want to protect our town get in the way, you guys will get us out of the way somehow.
We are just trying to stop you guys from ripping a big hole in the ground that can never be undone, creating a nightmare of traffic on Bowater Road, and possibly destroying the Hiwassee - all for maybe 20 jobs that you can't guarantee will all come from McMinn Co.
Those of us opposed to this quarry exist alright. Our grandparents and great grandparents lived in McMinn Co. and love this place. What loyalty do you have to our town? You telling me today you are going to live here the rest of your life? You gonna be here when someone gets sick because they've been breathing limestone dust for the next 50 years???

ReplyDeleteI've not posted here previously, and doubt I will again. I also will not leave my name, forgive me, but this is a small community and people hold grudges.
You asked what your phone bill has to do with anything. It has everything to do with why we are against this project. If you cannot be straight with us on a simple question like "where are you from", how can we trust you on any important issue related to a massive quarry in our backyards (not yours)? It is disingenuous for you to suggest you are from Cleveland (when you list your attorney's office as your address).
The fact is, we don’t care where you are from, or what type of accent you have, or what kind of hand-stitched velvet sports coat you wear. But we care that you look us in the eye and tell us the truth.
You have proven you cannot be straight with the community on simple questions, like where you are from, or who your parent company is, or where your funding comes from, or what kind of quarry experience you have. Heck, most of those issues are forgivable – only if you were honest with us the first time.
But you weren’t.
You are not being straight with the people of McMinn County. We don't trust you. We don't trust your intentions. We don't trust your quarry will be safe for our community. We don’t trust you won’t pollute the Hiwassee. We don’t trust your job projections. We don’t trust you’ll pay your fair share in taxes, or impact fees for road improvements. We don’t trust you to honor the lease – or find a new home - for the Head Start. We don’t trust your drivers to be safe.
Another reason we know you aren't from here: you sit back in your Philadelphia million dollar brownstone and say "it must be a consulting firm that is being paid to oppose us" - you don't think we are smart enough, or resourceful enough, to do a google search and learn about you. You think since we live next to a paper mill and are small in number, we will roll over and let you come in here and do what you want, say what you want. And since you don't know us, you will continue to underestimate us.
You do so at your own peril.

ReplyDeleteThe people in calhoun do not know what you are in for.The blasts will be heard and felt up to 5 miles away, windows will be broken, houses foundations will start cracking.wake up people and vote out your current mayor and commissioners.they want this quarry ..Get rid of your joke of a mayor and the town clown commisioners..Their are 3 people who are very against the quarry and will fight to see that its not put in calhoun.Walker, Damoth,and Burns..just ask the what they think about the quarry..

ReplyDelete((Homes near quarry sites can suffer damages such as cracked foundations, basement flooding, damage to in-ground pools, wells and septic systems, cracks in interior walls, ceiling collapse, holes in roofs and walls from flying rock debris, broken windows and more. Damage to water supplies and septic systems creates a health issue that may render the home uninhabitable. Blasting can release radon into the basements of surrounding homes. Radon causes lung cancer. This information has been obtained from complaints filed with fire departments, resident letters to local officials in various towns with quarries and documentation provided by at public hearings in various towns with quarries or opposing a planned quarry.
According to the SME Mining Handbook, flyrock can travel up to 3,300 feet. It can be a scattering of small rocks up to large boulders. It can smash through windows, doors, walls and roofs, creating a significant public safety hazard.
The roads in Berkley, Freetown are small, two lane narrow streets without street lights or sidewalks. These roads are lined with families with small children. School buses make pick ups and drop offs on Bryant St. and near-by roads. In towns with quarries residents complain about trucks speeding in residential neighborhoods, trucks spilling gravel and stone onto the roads, trucks dropping rocks onto cars, trucks shedding dust clouds behind them and traveling through town uncovered. There are also more cases of truck and pedestrian accidents and truck and passenger car accidents. Trucks loaded down with stone and gravel also cause excessive wear to the road, requiring more time and money in road repairs. More trucks create more emissions affecting health and air quality.
Areas of Berkley most directly affected would be Bryant St. Anthony St. Equestrian Way, Crystal, Elmwood, Myricks Street, Old Myricks St. and Paddelford, but noise and blasting may affect homes even further away. Areas of Freetown most directly affected include Bryant St., Richmond Road and Beechwood Road. Areas of Lakeville that could be affected include Malbone St., Peirce Ave, Mill St., Trinity Lane, Great Cedar Drive, Josh Road, Emerson Drive, Hawthorn Drive and Howland Road. Keep in mind that ground water could be affected for a mile or more. Noise travels through the air. Rock crushers can be heard for more then a mile away. Dust travels on the wind. Vibrations from blasting may travel a considerable distance. In actuality, a broader area could be affected.))

If you haven't noticed, most of the roads in this county are "tar and gravel" and all that gravel piles up on the shoulder or at intersections anyway. No big whopp....

Rick , i personnaly know of a woman who was called and told if she didn't stop her efforts to stop the quarry then they would GET RID OF HER FOR GOOD !

Despite the statement regarding Walker, Damoth and Burns, this is an outright falsehood by those who are hiding behind others. First, they lost the election so it is a moot point, secondly one of the three is vehemently supportive of the quarry. Please don't use threats or lies to further your agenda. If you don't want the quarry give your name but at least one of the former commissioners has flatly denied that he is hoping the quarry will come in thus generating industry and employment. As for the mayor, he too was elected and vigilantism and faceless threats cannot undo a democratic process called voting.
