Rock Quarry Announced

It is official - a 421-acre rock quarry has been proposed for the growth area to the east of Calhoun, TN in McMinn County.  No, the picture above is not the quarry....just yet.  But the site along the Hiwassee River is giving many of us reason to question this proposal.  Why so big?  How many trucks per day?  What will this do to the numerous waterways, the air quality, and the quality of life in Calhoun?  There are many more questions, if you have one, send it to us!

Just found out about this only this afternoon and I am livid since I live on Bowater Road. I am extremely upsat since this will be right behind our home..If we were not contacted today this would had slid on thru silently. We have a well and also use city water at the Calhoun Water. I have many health issues and breathing problems and I am outraged that Tarver would sell this property and let it be turned into a rock quarry..the traffic is bad enough with the log trucks flying up and down Bowater Road driving like their hair is on fire with no regard to safety(there was a wreck right in front of my home from a log truck driving down the middle of the road and cause the lady to run off the road injuring her)..Please let the people of Calhoun and Charleston attend this meeting and NOT let this pass..thank you

I agree with Debbie, this is terrible! When were our elected officials going to let us know about this?! A good friend tells me Mayor Barham is all for this, out promoting it. what in Gods name is he thinking? good thing he's not running for reelection. -

This rock quarry is a EXCELLENT idea! We need more jobs, and this will be a great help to our economy! Debbie, if your concerned about the air quality, go fight the stench of Bowater, and you fools quit trying to keep Calhoun and Charleston in the slump its in. Otherwise, both citys will go under, and then you can drive to Athens or Cleveland to get your goods. P.S. Hurray for Eric's IGA and Jakes Pizza and more (Pizza to Go) For having the balls to reopen!!! YAY!!!

  6. I agree 100%. Anything that will help our current unemployment situation in our community would be great! I wonder if the local price for gravel will go down?

Indeed, my family is welcoming the rock quarry with open arms. Think of all the benefits that we would gain from having a local rock quarry! McMinns oldest and finest city will be proud to provide gravel to the surrounding area! Here! Here! Jolly good show TDEC Mining! Thank you!

What if the quarry allowed all Calhoun area residents to get 1 free pickup truck load of gravel a year? I think a lot of people would be more in favor of the quarry. I am going to suggest this.

  9. I could use some gravel for my driveway before winter. How soon do you think they will be operating?

Someone in Calhoun is worried about "air quality"? Hilarious. The entire area smells like toxic noxious rotten egg farts. Thanks Bowater!

Build a quarry and diversify the job market. Newspapers are a dying medium. When they're gone, bowater will be too.. and it can't happen soon enough for me.

This quarry will only provide a very few jobs, most of which will be taken by people already employed by this company. All this quarry will cause is problems for the whole community. Air, water, traffic ,property damage. Anyone who believes it won't are complete idiots, or profitting from it.No sane person would want a quarry in their back yard. And they can't mine one 40 acre spot for 50 years, not even possible and get the amount of rock they are projecting. I have friends in the mining buisseness in West Virginia and have seen first hand the damage caused from this type of blasting and mining. So go blow wind up someone elses behind, cause those who say different are liers. Not to mention they are going to destroy hundreds of beautiful acres of forest and wildlife habitat. those who would do that, in my oppinion are careless money hungry fools. Every time they speak, something different is said than the time before, not being able to stick to one story. We need to stop this quarry and save our community and our beautiful landscape.I don't want this in my back yard, which is only 4000 feet from where it will be. I think if we're forced to let it happen, then they should have to buy those closest out before it causes the property values to drop. WE NEED TO STOP THIS QUARRY. EVERYONE NEEDS TO HELP.

It's a rock quarry not a nuclear waste dump! The citizens of Calhoun and Charleston should be thrilled that someone is actually wanting to bring more jobs to our area.

Another opportunity for growth in our area-new jobs for 50 or more people. EPA will regulate use of river water--water returned to river will actually be 'cleaner' than it was when taken out.
Who are the real opponents--maybe another gravel company that fears the competition?

Where are all of you "Negative Nancy" types now? Has your house been shaken off its foundation? Where is all of the dust on the roads? Any deaths due to dump trucks yet?
